Moose and Leaves

We romped around Little Cottonwood Canyon this afternoon and as luck would have it we spotted a moose!

img_8206We are pretty sure this is the same mom and baby moose duo that we saw two months ago as it is fairly close in terms of moose legs to where we spotted them last time.  However this was a much more precious sighting as we had them all to ourselves!  I think I could definitely get used to this moose thing, they are surprisingly graceful despite their large size and they seem to be so peaceful especially in the snow (from a safe distance that is).  Anyway, our purpose for heading up the mountains was really to see the fall foliage; here is Jason with some colorful Aspen trees in the background…

Jason posted a much better picture of the trees and moose, you can check out his pictures here.

tour guiding on the side

I am officially done with orientation and I am now practicing on my own, well actually I am never really alone because the group of nurses that I work with are so wonderful, everyone works so well together it is truly a team effort.  I have worked a couple night shifts now, had a few nights that were not so busy and then had a few nights were I can’t remember sitting down once!  When I am not working I am giving guided tours to some of our guests that we have been having!  Erin and Aaron’ came through for a night on their road trip, we didn’t have much time but we were able to take them up to Shoreline trail for a better view of the city…

img_7936I love our mountains, can’t seem to get enough of them and I am so excited for winter when they will be covered with a nice blanket of snow!  Kelsey and Michael also came to stay with us for a few days, unfortunately Jason’s schedule was a bit hectic so he wasn’t able to hang out too much.  I was able to accompany them up to Little Cottonwood for a picnic lunch and take a ride on the tram up to Hidden Peak…

img_7954After a long day in the canyon what could be better than a giant milkshake from Iceberg?

img_7980We each split a milkshake since there is more than enough for one person when you order a Regular sized shake! Jason is not a fan of Iceberg Drive-Inn since they forgot his chicken nugget dinner but since I emailed the company and explained our frustration with the service we received, they sent us a 10 dollar gift certificate to make up for our troubles!  I do like their sign even though their service sucks :)

Thanks for visiting K & M and E & A!  It was nice spending time with you guys.  Now I am off for five days and I have another visitor, Katie is here we are going to go exploring together!  Today we are thinking of hitting up a hot spring in Midway, I am so excited to have time to explore, my work schedule rocks!  I feel bad for Jas because he is back on his crazy schedule of 30 hour shifts every third day, he will be in dire need of our week off in September before the wedding.

Scenic Shopping

So I have noticed that even ugly box stores are scenic here…

img_7123

I am sure that I look funny takinig pictures in a parking lot but I have sort of got in the habit of doing it everytime I see a scenic “Big Box” store, I think it is sort of funny…

The Call

Jason has just left for his 3rd 30 hour shift, I woke up with him this morning because I feel a little worthless sleeping in when he has to go work for so many hours without sleep.  Plus it is going to be another hot day here so it is nice to be up early before the heat sets in.  I have been keeping myself busy while Jas is on call, on Saturday I went trail running…

I worked on addressing our wedding invitations I really am enjoying using the rubber stamp (Hollye designed the invites and stamp you can check more of her work here!)

Later in the evening I went over to Nancy’s and helped her prune her herb garden in return for my help I was able to take a bunch of herbs home with me to dry…

img_7324Oh yes there are a lot of herbs indeed and see those lawn chaises in the background?!  Our landlords (we shall call them the Preacher’s for privacy sake) gave us those for free!  They are about 50 years old I think but they have been kept in storage and they are in perfect condition they need new cushions though because the ones that they came with are sort of covered in mildew but for now I think throwing a towel over them will do just great.  I need to work on getting the patio area set-up.  The Preacher’s are funny landlords, sort of nosy at times but I think they actually really like us.  Last Saturday they were over in the morning measuring the garden beds so that they could buy us some soaker hoses, this was very nice of them but since I was not expecting anyone to be over that early I had the side door open and was still in my pajamas.  When I heard someone call my name I thought it was Jason trying to be funny and talking with an old lady voice but it was just Patty Preacher wanting me to go outside and help them hold the measuring tape.   Luckily we have not had to water too much since we had a huge downpour on Sunday which resulted in this…

img_7296Later that evening it turned into this…

img_7297Jason took a much better picture of the event which you can see on his blog here. So Jason has been getting home from his 30 hour shift around 1pm the following day he then takes a 2 hour nap and then he has told me that I must force him out of bed so that he doesn’t get “sleep inertia”.  Well, waking him up is not so easy to do, for one I feel bad but also Jason is not so easy to reason with when he is sleep deprived and although he has told me that I must force him out of bed and save him from this “sleep inertia” it is like he turns into a totally different person and he tries to trick me into letting him sleep longer even though he has told me prior to going down for a nap that I must not listen to him when he is like this.  Anyway, the reasoning behind this is that if he sleeps more than 2 hours than he will just be groggy and actually will not be “refreshing” himself,  he then is suppose to go to bed semi early that night and get 8 hours, or at least this is what they told him and the other sorry residents during a lecture on “sleep” during the first year of residency.  Here is a picture of Jason eating his post-call lunch after I had to drag him from the sleep inertia demons…

img_7284Sad, is it not?  Anyway, that is what is going on here guess I should get moving before it heats up.

Harvard Ave

Yesterday morning I got up early with Jas to wish him a good first day (30 hour shift actually) of doctoring, I even took his picture!

After he left I decided to go on a walk around the neighborhood to try and find the hidden Glen that Nancy told me about, I also wanted to try and spot some of these since they are all over our neighborhood, I am hoping to lure them to our backyard…

img_7255(Side note, check out the strip of grass in this person’s driveway, sort of a neat idea I think, catches oil or things that might drip from people’s cars!) We did spot some Quail in our backyard one morning before we put our bird feeder up but haven’t seen them since, we have been sprinkling seed on the ground in hopes that they return.  We have been calling our birds “customers” which started when we put up our bird feeder and I was sitting outside and waiting (patiently) for some birds to come, when one finally came Jason had just come outside to see what I was doing he started to talk to me but I had to shush him so that he wouldn’t scare the bird, I whispered “shhh, we have our first customer!” and it has stuck.   I found the secret Glen (Bonneville Glen), it is just two blocks up from our house, it has a nice stream and tree covered path…

img_7259I think it will be a perfect daily running spot and a great place to go on hot days and cool off in the shade.  Later in the day I went on a walk to Michael’s, it was more of a death march than a walk since I left in the heat of the day.  I needed to get an ink pad for my stamp so that I could start assembling our wedding invites, along the way I walked through Sugarhouse park, look at our mountains!

I am enjoying getting to know our little neighborhood so much to explore! I like how they stamp the sidewalk with the street names here just in case your neck is stiff and you can’t look up, so thoughtful. This is our street :)
