Mom and Jenna

My Mom and Jenna came to visit over their spring break.  We had a good time, went hiking in the foothills near my house and then had a picture perfect day of hiking on Antelope Island (polar opposite from my visit two weeks ago with Kirsten)…

img_9266

They were loving the dry and warm weather that we were having, we saw lots of lizards sunning themselves while we were hiking,  but they were too fast for us to snap a picture.  Antelope Island is such a weird place, it is only about 45 minutes from my house but the landscape is so different it seems as though you are much further…

img_9271

It was sad taking them to the airport last night; was so nice to have a couple of days with them and not have to work.  Hopefully I will be able to get to Oregon in May for a visit, I am longing for Oregon rain and some green in my life right now, just doesn’t seem right to have spring come without some moisture.

It is December already!

How the time flies when you have so many visitors!  I am seriously amazed by how many people have come to visit us in SLC, feel sort of spoiled too, it will be sad when people are sick of coming here but until then I am living it up!  In November we had Lindsay for a few days and luckily I also had some days off work so we were able to explore SLC unrestricted!  Lindsay, Jason and I hiked Grandeur Peak one day…

img_8428We also had a fun time exploring the SLC night scene which included a sad and hilarious attempt at “bar hopping” we ended our evening by performing Journey’s  “Don’t Stop Believing” at a Karaoke bar, it is pretty safe to say we were the only ones with talent, immediately after our performance despite the entire bar’s pleads for us to stay and give an encore, we left the building.  Here is a picture of Lindsay from that night…

img_8436After Lindsay left Steph came into town for Thanksgiving!  We had a good time as well, one of the absolute highlights of her trip was when we managed to come across 7 Newfoundlands at a very posh pet store in Park City, the owner of the dogs (and the store) must have sensed my love for them (I did tell him at least three times “I love them”) and gave us 2 Newfie’s for us to walk around Park City!!!  I was beyond excited, in fact I am still worked up about it, made my month!

I love them!  Walking them that day has only fueled my love and I can’t wait to have one of my own!  One of the Newf’s at the shop was 17 years old which is amazing for a  large HUGE dog and his owner told me that all of his dog’s have lived beyond 12 years of age.   Anyway, I love them :)

Steph and I also made a trip up to Brighton in Big Cottonwood Canyon for a sunny day of skiing.  It was our first day out for the season and our first time skiing in Utah, skiing in the sun = awesome!  I am so use to the miserable wet, cold and windy skiing in Oregon that I had no idea skiing could be so wonderful and enjoyable!

It was great fun, I am excited for more sunny skiing adventures!  While Steph was here she and I worked on a gingerbread house so that we could enter it virtually into the Dukovich-Kreim-Dukovcic gingerbread house contest that our families in Pennsylvania put on every year, this was our submission…

img_8469Oh Yeah we were pretty serious about it, our very own little Whoville!  Steph and I also cooked a turkey and did the whole Thanksgiving feast (mini style since it was just Jas, Steph and myself).  The turkey turned out amazing, although I have to say that while Lindsay was here she and I cooked a full turkey breast in preparation for my first bird and it was by no means an easy task, in fact it was a disaster.  Luckily the second bird turned out and was just wonderful, all credit going to Steph since I had to work the night before Thanksgiving when she did most of the work making the brine and everything else.   This picture is blurry but check that bird out!

Beautiful.  That is what has been going on in my world.  Jas is still hard at work but he is already half way through his first year of residency (woohoo!) the next two years should be much less intense in regards to his crazy schedule, so that is good.  He and I are looking forward to our break in February, we have big plans to explore the parks in Southern Utah, can’t wait!

October in Review

I got called off for four hours this morning so I don’t have to go into work until 11am; this was like winning the lottery since I had an awful night of sleep tossing and turning.  Plus now I will be able to get a few things done this morning including a nice walk around the neighborhood!  I have been meaning to update this but have not had the motivation despite having plenty of things to talk about.  We had more visitors!  We really are getting spoiled over here so much so that when we go two weeks without a visitor I start to complain that it is lonely especially when Jas is working the long hours and I am left to fend for myself!  Kathy, Kelsey and Matthew came through right around Jas’ birthday so they were able to celebrate with us. I whipped up a knit lobster for Jas as a tribute to one of his more famous baby pictures…

img_83881

This was a great little project to use up yarn and to kick off the knitting season.  I have so many projects that I have lined up it is sort of overwhelming, but this little guy took me about three days (roughly 12 hours of straight knitting) and I am quite pleased with him.  I think Jas was surprised too, he might hang out in our downstairs bathroom which is starting to have a nautical theme to it by default (all sparked by an antique fishing reel that was given as a wedding gift).  While our visitors were here we headed up to some of the canyons for fall foliage and in hopes of spotting more moose.  Kathy suggested a nice hike to Doughnut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon, parts of it reminded me of Oneonta Gorge in Oregon…

img_8323

Sadly we did not spot any moose but it was a nice day and a nice hike.  Kathy, Kelsey and Matthew ventured to the Hogle Zoo which is about 2 minutes from our house I stayed home to rake leaves but was quickly persuaded that I must visit the zoo when I learned of all the babies that they have right now!  So, the next day Jason, Kathy and I went to the zoo to spot some babies.  The one that I was most excited about was the baby elephant, Zuri!  She was so tiny!

img_8349Here is a picture that gives a better perspective as to how tiny she actually is…

img_8358So cute, they also had three baby tigers, a monkey and a giraffe, Kelsey got some good pictures that you can see on her blog here and Jason got some good ones that you can see on his blog here.  I can’t believe that it is November already, October came and went in a flash!  Jason and I spent Halloween at home passing out candy to the little kiddies,  I was sort of disappointed with the turn out I was thinking we were going to have way more trick-or-treaters and was overly prepared with my giant pot of candy.  I took some pictures with my phone and will have to figure out how to upload those, we did carve pumpkins but I did not dress up first year in a long time.   I am looking forward to Thanksgiving and more visitors to come, up next Lindsay on the 15th and Steph around the 21st!  Should be fun times ahead especially with the changing of the seasons I suspect we will be snow shoeing and skiing before too long!

Congrats to Dr. Dukovcic!

Steph defended her thesis yesterday and unfortunately I was unable to go but word on the street is that she did awesome!!!  I am so proud of her, finally she is done with NASH (the building that her lab is in has been such a huge part of her life that we refer to it as if it were alive, NASH!) way to go Dr. Steph!

img_6259

I can’t believe it is September!

Katie had a nice visit to Utah, while she was here we went on a few hikes, swam in a crater, explored the farmers market, toured the LDS temple, ate authentic Mexican at the Red Iguana, toured my favorite canyon Little Cottonwood, window shopped in ritzy Park City and much much more.  It was so nice having a buddy to do some tourist type activities!  She also was in time for our tomato boom, we have so many ripe tomatoes right now it is great!  We made tomato, cucumber and pepper salads, BLT’s and just sliced them plain.  I love tomatoes that are home grown they taste so much better than store bought, I love lining up the fruits of our labor aren’t they beautiful?!…

img_80501

And we still have dozens more ripening on the vines as we speak, I am really missing not being close to Grams and AK this time of year, this is when we would start getting loads and loads of tomatoes from Dr. Palermos garden and then have a fun filled day of canning!  This year has been to busy for me to can but next year I will be more organized, I have the perfect basement for storing.  Speaking of Grams, I wanted to share this picture of the two of us, it is one of my favorites, we were eating chocolate in her kitchen a few months ago and trying out her new digital camera, Jason snapped a shot before I was able to swallow all of my chocolate…

grams-and-me

So back to Kate’s visit, we did a very steep hike up Bowman Fork in Mill Creek, it was a major butt burner, here is Kate coming down through a nice meadow of wildflowers…

img_8064

Kate also had the pleasure of meeting Socks my very forward cat neighbor, I like to call him my rent-a-kitty because he is always coming over to “snuggle” with me, he made himself right at home on Kate’s lap…

img_8007

We also did a hike up to the towers on Red Butte, it was also a very good work out and the view was quite impressive although it would be better had we went earlier in the day…

img_8021

Those are just a few of the highlights…I have a few night shifts ahead of me and then we will be getting ready to fly to Oregon for our wedding, yikes I still feel like I have so much to do!

tour guiding on the side

I am officially done with orientation and I am now practicing on my own, well actually I am never really alone because the group of nurses that I work with are so wonderful, everyone works so well together it is truly a team effort.  I have worked a couple night shifts now, had a few nights that were not so busy and then had a few nights were I can’t remember sitting down once!  When I am not working I am giving guided tours to some of our guests that we have been having!  Erin and Aaron’ came through for a night on their road trip, we didn’t have much time but we were able to take them up to Shoreline trail for a better view of the city…

img_7936I love our mountains, can’t seem to get enough of them and I am so excited for winter when they will be covered with a nice blanket of snow!  Kelsey and Michael also came to stay with us for a few days, unfortunately Jason’s schedule was a bit hectic so he wasn’t able to hang out too much.  I was able to accompany them up to Little Cottonwood for a picnic lunch and take a ride on the tram up to Hidden Peak…

img_7954After a long day in the canyon what could be better than a giant milkshake from Iceberg?

img_7980We each split a milkshake since there is more than enough for one person when you order a Regular sized shake! Jason is not a fan of Iceberg Drive-Inn since they forgot his chicken nugget dinner but since I emailed the company and explained our frustration with the service we received, they sent us a 10 dollar gift certificate to make up for our troubles!  I do like their sign even though their service sucks :)

img_7978

Thanks for visiting K & M and E & A!  It was nice spending time with you guys.  Now I am off for five days and I have another visitor, Katie is here we are going to go exploring together!  Today we are thinking of hitting up a hot spring in Midway, I am so excited to have time to explore, my work schedule rocks!  I feel bad for Jas because he is back on his crazy schedule of 30 hour shifts every third day, he will be in dire need of our week off in September before the wedding.

More visitors!

Dan and Kathy came back down to visit us on their way to Southern Utah, luckily I had a few days off so I was able to tag-along with them while they explored the SLC area.  Jas was able to hang out a little bit since the ambulatory clinics at the VA were not too demanding unfortunately he is back to doing the 30 hour call schedule every fourth day.  While they were here we went to the Red Butte Gardens which are just a mile or so from our house, they had several different themed gardens I think the favorite was the Children’s Garden; so many cute ideas! Here is a picture of Kathy and I hanging out in one of the “playhouses” they had for the kids…

img_7791You can see the cute little chairs they had carved out of stumps and the plants were trained to grow over the wire fencing which provided the structure for the playhouse, it was so nice and cool inside because of the plants perfect for hiding out on a hot summer day!  They had a large tunnel trellis that was shaped like a snake, you entered through his mouth and then you could wind through his whole body like a maze, here is a picture of the inside of the snakes belly…

img_7779

The next day we went up to Big Cottonwood Canyon and did a hike to Solitude Lake, here is a picture of Jason going out on a limb…

img_7809

It is so different seeing the white bark of the Aspen trees, sort of looks fake to me…

img_7834We ended our day by driving down into Heber City on the other side of the Canyon and then swinging past Utah’s Bridal Veil falls, it was impressive but my goodness were there a lot of people standing at the base of the falls sort of like going to Multnomah falls but worse because here people were splashing around in the water, sort of takes away from the beauty.

img_7842

The next day we went up to Little Cottonwood Canyon (this is for sure my favorite canyon) I love the steepness of the peaks, it really makes me feel like I am in Switzerland.  Dan, Kathy and I did a hike to Cecret Lake which is in Alta (Jas had to work :( )…

img_7868It was a nice little hike although it will probably be even better in early fall once all the kids go back to school.  Then we went over to Snowbird and took a ride on the tram which takes you up to the top of Hidden Peak which is 11,000 feet!  It was sort of scary but awesome at the same time here is a picture of Dan filming our ascent…

img_7890

And a view from the very top…

img_7910Our chariot…

img_7905

Can you believe that thing fits 125 people!  Our friend Joe from Ohio comes out to ski in Utah every year, he tells me that it is insane in the winter time, they pack skiers and boarders in there with all their equipment, you can barely even move!  It is much less crowded in the summer lots of elbow room and you can walk around to get all the different angles, not sure how I would handle being packed in there in the winter.   We ate our lunch on the top of Hidden Peak…

img_7911

Then we took the chairlift down to the bottom, I was so hoping that we would see another moose but we didn’t, I think I may have spoiled myself because now every time I go up there I am going to expect to see one!  We had a great time with you guys, thanks for coming out again!

More from AK’s visit

This past weekend AK and I went up to Park City for their Arts Festival, after walking around the festival we decided to take a chair lift ride.  Even though it is summer and there isn’t any snow up there right now a few of the resorts keep their lifts running so that you can take a ride and see the scenery.  You can stay on the lift and not get off or you are allowed to get off at the top and hike around, you can also bring your mountain bike along and ride down.  Since we got the last ride of the day before they shut down the lift we were not able to get off at the top and explore but it was still fun to ride, sort of like being on a nature safari in the sky.

img_7731We were laughing because it was weird to be on a ski lift without skis on, so when we were approaching the end of the lift we found our selves automatically raising our tips…

img_7736When we got back to SLC we picked up Jas and went to find a good place to watch the sunset…

img_7749It was a pretty evening you can see some of the Salt Lake off  to the left in the picture below and what looks like a mountain range in the background is actually Antelope Island which is in Salt Lake…

img_7754

Thanks for coming out to visit us AK we had a great time and Happy Birthday to you today!

Furniture Hike and Little Cottonwood

AK came to visit us and it worked out that I had a three day weekend so on Friday I took her on the furniture hike up Red Butte.  We found this cute “remote” on the coffee table, as you can see someone crafted this mock remote that is complete with buttons to either dial up or down the sun, moon or clouds.img_7559

I love that this hike is practically in our backyard!

img_7564

Yesterday Jas came along with us to explore Little Cottonwood Canyon (this is the canyon that has Alta and Snowbird ski resorts in it), it was lovely up there I can’t wait for ski season it is going to be awesome having world class ski resorts 20 minutes from our home.  Jason already spoiled it with his blog but, while we were at Snowbird we spotted a mama mo0se and her calf!!!  I was so excited I have never seen a moose in the wild before but now I can say that I have seen two!

img_7624

We had a nice picnic at Alta before going on our hike…

img_7635

We went on a hike to Twin Lakes which is a drinking water reservoir nestled between Alta in Little Cottonwood and Brighton which is in Big Cottonwood (elevation 9,991 feet).  It was 2.1 miles to the top with an option to walk 1/2 a mile down to the lakes edge…

img_7693

When we got home we made eggplant rolls, we sliced them lengthwise, breaded and fried them, spread ricotta and parmesan cheese on them and then rolled them and baked them with tomato sauce over them, a picture before the sauce was poured over them, yum.

img_7720

Not sure what we are going to do today yet, there is an arts festival in Park City this weekend or we might go see Bridal Veil falls; I have decided that naming a waterfall bridal veil is like naming a lake clear.

Road trip #2

This was my second time driving across the country this year and my fifth time doing it all together, each time I have done it I have gone different routes so I am seeing new things.  When we moved Jas out to Ohio four years ago we actually drove across Canada which was the most scenic of the treks by far.  I didn’t take very many pictures of the beginning of the trip since the Midwest is pretty uneventful as far as scenery goes, on our second day of driving we stopped in Kansas at a park for a while to stretch our legs and so Jas and his Dad could play a round of Frisbee golf.  The park had a weird layout for how huge it was there wasn’t any kind of main access area but it did have a corral of Buffalo so Kathy and I hung out with them for a while trying to get a good picture although the double fence made it hard to get close to them.

As we were driving through Eastern Kansas heading into Colorado we had to drive through a huge system of storms.  There were a lot of weird looking clouds and the severe weather alert kept coming up on the radio announcing warnings for different counties which was scary since we didn’t really know what counties we were heading into since we didn’t have a map!

Later we looked up the name for the clouds that we saw; these are Mammatus clouds and they are indicative of very unstable air.

It was a very eerie experience driving through those clouds feeling like a tornado was going to touch down at any moment and send us flying to our deaths.  When we got to Jason’s Great Aunt Jeanne’s later that evening we watched the news and there were 5 confirmed tornadoes in the same area that we had been driving through.    We spent two days at Aunt Jeanne’s in Denver, she is a very neat lady full of spunk reminds me a lot of Grams I think those two would get along well together with their love of gardening and abundance of energy, here we are having lunch out on her back patio…

Jason had interviewed for residency in Denver as well and Jeanne tells us that she was hoping for us to get back to Portland but if that didn’t happen she was secretly hoping for Denver, I thought this was funny since Grams had told Jason and I the same thing after finding out that we were headed to Utah she secretly was hoping for Columbus if he did not get into the Portland program.   Jason and I drove to Boulder in the afternoon and did a quick tour of the Flagstaff area, it was a cloudy afternoon so the views of Boulder from up there and the surrounding mountains were not the best but it was still fun, here is a picture of us sitting on a boulder looking out at Boulder.

Lots of really pretty wildflowers in bloom up there, it is always fun to see what the different kinds are compared to what we have in Oregon…

The next day Jas, Kathy, Dan and I went to the Denver Botanical Gardens which was fun but I think we all agreed that they had nothing on Butchart Gardens in Victoria B.C.  The tropical gardens are always my favorite, reminds me of living at the OSU Greenhouses, here is the inside of an Angel’s Trumpet (Brugmansia )

The next day we left Denver and headed through the mountains towards Utah…

We arrived in Utah took us about 9 hours to drive from Denver to Salt Lake there are not many large towns until you reach Provo.

Surprisingly the truck was able to back up into our narrow driveway making unpacking a little easier…

I love our new home, there is so much for us to explore here I am sure three years is going to wiz right by.  Dan found a system of trails that is within walking distance from our house; here is a picture of Jas perched on a rock chair looking out over the valley…

That is all for now but there is more to come, pictures of our trip to Antelope Island, Scenic shopping experience, New foods to try and of course Pictures of the new place all put together!
