Hello November…

Jason and I kicked off the Holiday season by making a batch of apple cider, since we aren’t going to be able to come home for any of the Holidays this year due to Jason being a slave to the University of Utah we decided we needed a little holiday cheer early on to soothe us…

Yesterday I hiked Mt. Wire for time trial (this is the longer portion of the furniture hike and has become the “home course” for hikes) as I was trekking up the trail I almost stepped on this little guy…

img_8408That is a tarantula! My first wild tarantula!  I was really excited and so happy that I decided to bring my camera with me last minute.

Hahaha! The quarter for scale, that cracks me up. I remember you with that little newt, “We need a penny, we need a penny!” That’s nuts! I’ve never seen one in the wild. I’m a little embarrassed I can only picture them in a terrarium. What did it act like? Aggressive? Afraid?

The cider looks yummy! I probably would have screamed if I came upon that spider!

I will not lie, I was sort of freaked out thinking that it was going to attack me until I remembered someone telling me that they are actually very shy creatures. When I placed a quarter next to it it hunkered down like it was trying to make itself disappear. They are not very fast either (or at least this one wasn’t) because he was there when I came down my hike 40 min later.

Aww! I have always been kind of freaked out by them, but after holding one at the bug zoo in Victoria BC, I realized how gentle, fragile and light weight they are. Like a tiny 8-legged elephant walking on my hand.

I would be really scared that the tarantula would follow me on the trail. I would constantly be looking over my shoulder!
