October in Review

I got called off for four hours this morning so I don’t have to go into work until 11am; this was like winning the lottery since I had an awful night of sleep tossing and turning.  Plus now I will be able to get a few things done this morning including a nice walk around the neighborhood!  I have been meaning to update this but have not had the motivation despite having plenty of things to talk about.  We had more visitors!  We really are getting spoiled over here so much so that when we go two weeks without a visitor I start to complain that it is lonely especially when Jas is working the long hours and I am left to fend for myself!  Kathy, Kelsey and Matthew came through right around Jas’ birthday so they were able to celebrate with us. I whipped up a knit lobster for Jas as a tribute to one of his more famous baby pictures…

This was a great little project to use up yarn and to kick off the knitting season.  I have so many projects that I have lined up it is sort of overwhelming, but this little guy took me about three days (roughly 12 hours of straight knitting) and I am quite pleased with him.  I think Jas was surprised too, he might hang out in our downstairs bathroom which is starting to have a nautical theme to it by default (all sparked by an antique fishing reel that was given as a wedding gift).  While our visitors were here we headed up to some of the canyons for fall foliage and in hopes of spotting more moose.  Kathy suggested a nice hike to Doughnut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon, parts of it reminded me of Oneonta Gorge in Oregon…

Sadly we did not spot any moose but it was a nice day and a nice hike.  Kathy, Kelsey and Matthew ventured to the Hogle Zoo which is about 2 minutes from our house I stayed home to rake leaves but was quickly persuaded that I must visit the zoo when I learned of all the babies that they have right now!  So, the next day Jason, Kathy and I went to the zoo to spot some babies.  The one that I was most excited about was the baby elephant, Zuri!  She was so tiny!

img_8349Here is a picture that gives a better perspective as to how tiny she actually is…

img_8358So cute, they also had three baby tigers, a monkey and a giraffe, Kelsey got some good pictures that you can see on her blog here and Jason got some good ones that you can see on his blog here.  I can’t believe that it is November already, October came and went in a flash!  Jason and I spent Halloween at home passing out candy to the little kiddies,  I was sort of disappointed with the turn out I was thinking we were going to have way more trick-or-treaters and was overly prepared with my giant pot of candy.  I took some pictures with my phone and will have to figure out how to upload those, we did carve pumpkins but I did not dress up first year in a long time.   I am looking forward to Thanksgiving and more visitors to come, up next Lindsay on the 15th and Steph around the 21st!  Should be fun times ahead especially with the changing of the seasons I suspect we will be snow shoeing and skiing before too long!

Elefante

Finished this little guy today and I am going to ship him to Corvallis so he can help Steph with her research, was super fun and easy to make!  I am probably going to make more since this was a nice way to use up extra yarn.

I found the pattern on Ravelry a site that I am really starting to love!  You can check out the pattern here if you like.

<3/150

Happy Valentine’s day and Happy 150th Oregon!  One of the finished projects I have been working on for the occasion…

I am really enjoying knitting these up, I liked this pattern even though it is not an accurate representation of a real heart (it tries though with something resembling pulmonary arteries and an aortic arch if you look for it) I think I found a new knitting obsession; knitted plush things are so much fun!  I am feeling a whole anatomy set coming on!

This little one was knitted with pot-dyed “yummy” superwash wool 130gms for the main color (red/purple variegated portion) and then I used a silk yarn for the contrasting color in the same weight, both yarns would be excellent for socks and I had so much leftover after one heart that I could probably get about 5 or 6 more knitted up!

Easy like Saturday Morning…

A few things to update…So as I was saying earlier, I ordered my own cake for graduation from this famous bakery here (I guess it has been around for a while, Grams tells me she used to get cakes there for Graduations and such when my Dad was little) anyway, the bakery is in the heart of the hood, like there are police officers in there during closing time guarding the doors (I think they must also get compensated for their services).  So when ordering my cake I was trying to describe what I wanted on it, convo went like this:

Me: “I need a cake for someone who is graduating from nursing school”

Young Cashier: “What do you want it to say?”

Me: “Congratulations…Megan”

YC: “You want a plastic grad cap for an extra 3.95?”

Me: “Well, no, how about a red cross?”

YC: “You want a cross of roses?”

Me: “Well, no I want a red cross, like a medical cross”

YC: “So you don’t want a cross of roses?”

Me: “It isn’t a religious cross, not like the one Jesus is on, it needs to have equal sides, like more of a plus sign than a cross, you know the one that they use at the American Red Cross?”

YC: Blank stare

Me: “Just write down ‘American Red Cross’ I am sure they will know what you are talking about and put nursing school graduation in parenthesis they will get it”

YC: crosses out ‘Cross of Roses’ “OK, so no Cross of Roses”

I was so afraid when I picked it up that there was going to be a cross of red roses, but thankfully the cross was just what I wanted and they put the roses on the corners of the cake, they sure love their roses there.

Since I am still in limbo over here, waiting to hear from the Board of Nursing to schedule my test I have been trying to be good and do a little studying everyday but…I also found this pattern on Knitty that I had to do, I was sort of like the woman in Napoleon Dynamite that Uncle Rico was trying to sell the indestructible Tupperware to with the bonus free boat , I saw the pattern and said “I want that”.  So I have been taking breaks between studying to work on this…

If you can’t tell what it is yet, you will soon because I am almost done and can’t wait to make another, they are going to be my Valentines this year!  In other news, I am wearing short sleeves today, it is going to hit 50 degrees woohoo, and it isn’t just any short sleeve shirt, it is my rad new t-shirt that Erin batiked for me…

Scarf is done…finally

I started this scarf for Jason last spring, it is a really fun pattern that I got out of the Son of Stich n’ Bitch.  It is the first cabled piece that I have done and it was quite fun.  I used Kiwi lamb’s pride worsted weight and lined the back with fleece so it will be nice and soft, the cold weather and lack of school or work has been very conducive to getting my knit on…

I did a blanket stitch to attach the fleece lining, had to do it by hand because I was afraid to put it under my machine, I had visions of the yarn being shredded.

Good thing I finished it just in time for Jason to get some good use out of it, we are still having freezing cold temps here, ugg.

back to more knitting!
