<3 Oregon

I have gotten a bit behind on the blogging scene despite lots of recent going-ons.  Last week we returned from our trip home to Oregon, it was another whirlwind trip but still good to be back and smell the clean air.  I am always so shocked by how green it is, flying into Portland is such a contrast compared to Salt Lake (even though Utah has been having a “wet” spring).  I was able to see almost all of my family, Jason flew in a few days after me and he managed to squeeze in a lot within his few days as well.  I spent some time in Longview at my Mom’s, Jenna played hookie from school we hung out for the day and then went to visit Mom at work,  here she is showing off the baby chicks in her classroom….

Dan and Kathy hosted a BBQ and we hung out Oregon-style around the fire pit…

img_9517Erin drove up from Corvallis and we toured the Japanese Gardens…

And we ate cupcakes at St. Cupcake…

Jason and I met up with Steph, Jenna, Mom and Jim to watch a Portland Timbers Game, afterward we met up with Lindsay to have drinks at La Merde and dessert at the Rimsky-Korsakoffee House.

We went on a hike with Dan, Kathy and Steph to Wahclella Falls in the Columbia River Gorge…

img_9538

Everything was so lush and green…

img_9542We also got to visit with Corey, Alyssa and the new addition Carson!  I didn’t get any pictures but man is he a cute one, I enjoyed cuddling with him, so tiny! I miss you Oregon and everything and one that lives there!

Weekend Warriors

Last weekend Jason and I both happened to have three days off so we decided to make the trek down south to see Arches and two districts of Canyonlands NP.  The weather was perfect, 80 degrees, sunny and clear blue skies.  It was the first camping trip and sunburn of the season!  We camped along the Colorado River on highway 128, primitive camp sites for 8 dollars a night!!!  That is how much camping should cost, I can’t remember the last time I paid that little for a campsite.  There weren’t any showers but they had pit toilets and we were only there for two nights so we could do without showers.

img_9296

I had worked the night before and had thought that I could sleep in the car on the way down but the excitement kept me awake.  We set up camp and then took a drive through Arches which was only 1 mile or so from our campsite.  We hiked part of the Devil’s Garden trail it was perfect no one was there except us…

img_9323

This is what 30 hours without sleep looks like when you are in a National Park, not bad!  My feet were dragging but it was worth it!

img_9407

I can imagine that this place is a zoo in the summer, luckily we had the place pretty much to ourselves on our first day but it filled up on Saturday.  The next day we drove about 40 miles to the Needles district of Canyonlands NP.  It was pretty excellent, I think not very many people must visit this park because again we had the place to ourselves despite Arches being totally flooded with cars.  We saw some petroglyphs!

img_9369Some of the glyphs date back to pre-columbian times but as you can see the “wheel” was most likely done during the time of the pioneers.  Either way it was pretty cool, I love the little goat glyphs.  We drove back through Arches on the way home and caught a glimpse of Delicate Arch, the parking lot for the hike up to the Arch was full, ugh, so we went to the other parking lot for the viewpoint…

img_9335So we are going to have to go back for a more close up picture perhaps even earlier in the season to avoid the crowds.  We also hit up the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands to see Mesa Arch.  I think this was probably the most impressive view/arch that we saw and again we were one of two cars in the parking lot which made it even more excellent…

img_9376

and another view from under Mesa Arch…

img_9378

We had a nice sunset here, the sun was behind us and the last rays of the day were shining on the distant rocks…

img_9394

and another…

img_9395

It was a perfect mini trip to get us psyched for summer.  We crossed off two more NP’s now we just need to hit up Zion and the other two districts of Canyonlands.  We also are planning on going back to Capitol Reef to do some backpacking/mountain biking, yea for living so close to cool places!

Mom and Jenna

My Mom and Jenna came to visit over their spring break.  We had a good time, went hiking in the foothills near my house and then had a picture perfect day of hiking on Antelope Island (polar opposite from my visit two weeks ago with Kirsten)…

img_9266

They were loving the dry and warm weather that we were having, we saw lots of lizards sunning themselves while we were hiking,  but they were too fast for us to snap a picture.  Antelope Island is such a weird place, it is only about 45 minutes from my house but the landscape is so different it seems as though you are much further…

img_9271

It was sad taking them to the airport last night; was so nice to have a couple of days with them and not have to work.  Hopefully I will be able to get to Oregon in May for a visit, I am longing for Oregon rain and some green in my life right now, just doesn’t seem right to have spring come without some moisture.

3.

Visit all of Utah’s National Parks in 2010…two down.

img_8669The above picture is of Capitol Reef, Jas and I got away last weekend, we first explored Bryce and then on the way home took a quick tour of Capitol Reef.  I can’t wait to go back to do more hiking at Capitol it was absolutely amazing there, even better was the fact that we had the whole park to ourselves, literally we did not see another person!

img_8552Above is a picture of Jas cross country skiing at Bryce, looks as though he is about to go over the edge!  We had perfect weather this day, totally clear and warm enough to ski with just a long sleeve shirt on.

2.

Go on more winter hikes…even if it means I must go alone.

img_8541

It is December already!

How the time flies when you have so many visitors!  I am seriously amazed by how many people have come to visit us in SLC, feel sort of spoiled too, it will be sad when people are sick of coming here but until then I am living it up!  In November we had Lindsay for a few days and luckily I also had some days off work so we were able to explore SLC unrestricted!  Lindsay, Jason and I hiked Grandeur Peak one day…

img_8428We also had a fun time exploring the SLC night scene which included a sad and hilarious attempt at “bar hopping” we ended our evening by performing Journey’s  “Don’t Stop Believing” at a Karaoke bar, it is pretty safe to say we were the only ones with talent, immediately after our performance despite the entire bar’s pleads for us to stay and give an encore, we left the building.  Here is a picture of Lindsay from that night…

img_8436After Lindsay left Steph came into town for Thanksgiving!  We had a good time as well, one of the absolute highlights of her trip was when we managed to come across 7 Newfoundlands at a very posh pet store in Park City, the owner of the dogs (and the store) must have sensed my love for them (I did tell him at least three times “I love them”) and gave us 2 Newfie’s for us to walk around Park City!!!  I was beyond excited, in fact I am still worked up about it, made my month!

I love them!  Walking them that day has only fueled my love and I can’t wait to have one of my own!  One of the Newf’s at the shop was 17 years old which is amazing for a  large HUGE dog and his owner told me that all of his dog’s have lived beyond 12 years of age.   Anyway, I love them :)

Steph and I also made a trip up to Brighton in Big Cottonwood Canyon for a sunny day of skiing.  It was our first day out for the season and our first time skiing in Utah, skiing in the sun = awesome!  I am so use to the miserable wet, cold and windy skiing in Oregon that I had no idea skiing could be so wonderful and enjoyable!

It was great fun, I am excited for more sunny skiing adventures!  While Steph was here she and I worked on a gingerbread house so that we could enter it virtually into the Dukovich-Kreim-Dukovcic gingerbread house contest that our families in Pennsylvania put on every year, this was our submission…

img_8469Oh Yeah we were pretty serious about it, our very own little Whoville!  Steph and I also cooked a turkey and did the whole Thanksgiving feast (mini style since it was just Jas, Steph and myself).  The turkey turned out amazing, although I have to say that while Lindsay was here she and I cooked a full turkey breast in preparation for my first bird and it was by no means an easy task, in fact it was a disaster.  Luckily the second bird turned out and was just wonderful, all credit going to Steph since I had to work the night before Thanksgiving when she did most of the work making the brine and everything else.   This picture is blurry but check that bird out!

Beautiful.  That is what has been going on in my world.  Jas is still hard at work but he is already half way through his first year of residency (woohoo!) the next two years should be much less intense in regards to his crazy schedule, so that is good.  He and I are looking forward to our break in February, we have big plans to explore the parks in Southern Utah, can’t wait!

Hello November…

Jason and I kicked off the Holiday season by making a batch of apple cider, since we aren’t going to be able to come home for any of the Holidays this year due to Jason being a slave to the University of Utah we decided we needed a little holiday cheer early on to soothe us…

img_84071

Yesterday I hiked Mt. Wire for time trial (this is the longer portion of the furniture hike and has become the “home course” for hikes) as I was trekking up the trail I almost stepped on this little guy…

img_8408That is a tarantula! My first wild tarantula!  I was really excited and so happy that I decided to bring my camera with me last minute.

img_8411It is official now, I live in the desert.

Moose and Leaves

We romped around Little Cottonwood Canyon this afternoon and as luck would have it we spotted a moose!

img_8206We are pretty sure this is the same mom and baby moose duo that we saw two months ago as it is fairly close in terms of moose legs to where we spotted them last time.  However this was a much more precious sighting as we had them all to ourselves!  I think I could definitely get used to this moose thing, they are surprisingly graceful despite their large size and they seem to be so peaceful especially in the snow (from a safe distance that is).  Anyway, our purpose for heading up the mountains was really to see the fall foliage; here is Jason with some colorful Aspen trees in the background…

img_8226

Jason posted a much better picture of the trees and moose, you can check out his pictures here.

I can’t believe it is September!

Katie had a nice visit to Utah, while she was here we went on a few hikes, swam in a crater, explored the farmers market, toured the LDS temple, ate authentic Mexican at the Red Iguana, toured my favorite canyon Little Cottonwood, window shopped in ritzy Park City and much much more.  It was so nice having a buddy to do some tourist type activities!  She also was in time for our tomato boom, we have so many ripe tomatoes right now it is great!  We made tomato, cucumber and pepper salads, BLT’s and just sliced them plain.  I love tomatoes that are home grown they taste so much better than store bought, I love lining up the fruits of our labor aren’t they beautiful?!…

img_80501

And we still have dozens more ripening on the vines as we speak, I am really missing not being close to Grams and AK this time of year, this is when we would start getting loads and loads of tomatoes from Dr. Palermos garden and then have a fun filled day of canning!  This year has been to busy for me to can but next year I will be more organized, I have the perfect basement for storing.  Speaking of Grams, I wanted to share this picture of the two of us, it is one of my favorites, we were eating chocolate in her kitchen a few months ago and trying out her new digital camera, Jason snapped a shot before I was able to swallow all of my chocolate…

grams-and-me

So back to Kate’s visit, we did a very steep hike up Bowman Fork in Mill Creek, it was a major butt burner, here is Kate coming down through a nice meadow of wildflowers…

img_8064

Kate also had the pleasure of meeting Socks my very forward cat neighbor, I like to call him my rent-a-kitty because he is always coming over to “snuggle” with me, he made himself right at home on Kate’s lap…

img_8007

We also did a hike up to the towers on Red Butte, it was also a very good work out and the view was quite impressive although it would be better had we went earlier in the day…

img_8021

Those are just a few of the highlights…I have a few night shifts ahead of me and then we will be getting ready to fly to Oregon for our wedding, yikes I still feel like I have so much to do!

More visitors!

Dan and Kathy came back down to visit us on their way to Southern Utah, luckily I had a few days off so I was able to tag-along with them while they explored the SLC area.  Jas was able to hang out a little bit since the ambulatory clinics at the VA were not too demanding unfortunately he is back to doing the 30 hour call schedule every fourth day.  While they were here we went to the Red Butte Gardens which are just a mile or so from our house, they had several different themed gardens I think the favorite was the Children’s Garden; so many cute ideas! Here is a picture of Kathy and I hanging out in one of the “playhouses” they had for the kids…

img_7791You can see the cute little chairs they had carved out of stumps and the plants were trained to grow over the wire fencing which provided the structure for the playhouse, it was so nice and cool inside because of the plants perfect for hiding out on a hot summer day!  They had a large tunnel trellis that was shaped like a snake, you entered through his mouth and then you could wind through his whole body like a maze, here is a picture of the inside of the snakes belly…

img_7779

The next day we went up to Big Cottonwood Canyon and did a hike to Solitude Lake, here is a picture of Jason going out on a limb…

img_7809

It is so different seeing the white bark of the Aspen trees, sort of looks fake to me…

img_7834We ended our day by driving down into Heber City on the other side of the Canyon and then swinging past Utah’s Bridal Veil falls, it was impressive but my goodness were there a lot of people standing at the base of the falls sort of like going to Multnomah falls but worse because here people were splashing around in the water, sort of takes away from the beauty.

img_7842

The next day we went up to Little Cottonwood Canyon (this is for sure my favorite canyon) I love the steepness of the peaks, it really makes me feel like I am in Switzerland.  Dan, Kathy and I did a hike to Cecret Lake which is in Alta (Jas had to work :( )…

img_7868It was a nice little hike although it will probably be even better in early fall once all the kids go back to school.  Then we went over to Snowbird and took a ride on the tram which takes you up to the top of Hidden Peak which is 11,000 feet!  It was sort of scary but awesome at the same time here is a picture of Dan filming our ascent…

img_7890

And a view from the very top…

img_7910Our chariot…

img_7905

Can you believe that thing fits 125 people!  Our friend Joe from Ohio comes out to ski in Utah every year, he tells me that it is insane in the winter time, they pack skiers and boarders in there with all their equipment, you can barely even move!  It is much less crowded in the summer lots of elbow room and you can walk around to get all the different angles, not sure how I would handle being packed in there in the winter.   We ate our lunch on the top of Hidden Peak…

img_7911

Then we took the chairlift down to the bottom, I was so hoping that we would see another moose but we didn’t, I think I may have spoiled myself because now every time I go up there I am going to expect to see one!  We had a great time with you guys, thanks for coming out again!
