Weekend Warriors

Last weekend Jason and I both happened to have three days off so we decided to make the trek down south to see Arches and two districts of Canyonlands NP.  The weather was perfect, 80 degrees, sunny and clear blue skies.  It was the first camping trip and sunburn of the season!  We camped along the Colorado River on highway 128, primitive camp sites for 8 dollars a night!!!  That is how much camping should cost, I can’t remember the last time I paid that little for a campsite.  There weren’t any showers but they had pit toilets and we were only there for two nights so we could do without showers.

I had worked the night before and had thought that I could sleep in the car on the way down but the excitement kept me awake.  We set up camp and then took a drive through Arches which was only 1 mile or so from our campsite.  We hiked part of the Devil’s Garden trail it was perfect no one was there except us…

This is what 30 hours without sleep looks like when you are in a National Park, not bad!  My feet were dragging but it was worth it!

I can imagine that this place is a zoo in the summer, luckily we had the place pretty much to ourselves on our first day but it filled up on Saturday.  The next day we drove about 40 miles to the Needles district of Canyonlands NP.  It was pretty excellent, I think not very many people must visit this park because again we had the place to ourselves despite Arches being totally flooded with cars.  We saw some petroglyphs!

img_9369Some of the glyphs date back to pre-columbian times but as you can see the “wheel” was most likely done during the time of the pioneers.  Either way it was pretty cool, I love the little goat glyphs.  We drove back through Arches on the way home and caught a glimpse of Delicate Arch, the parking lot for the hike up to the Arch was full, ugh, so we went to the other parking lot for the viewpoint…

img_9335So we are going to have to go back for a more close up picture perhaps even earlier in the season to avoid the crowds.  We also hit up the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands to see Mesa Arch.  I think this was probably the most impressive view/arch that we saw and again we were one of two cars in the parking lot which made it even more excellent…

and another view from under Mesa Arch…

We had a nice sunset here, the sun was behind us and the last rays of the day were shining on the distant rocks…

It was a perfect mini trip to get us psyched for summer.  We crossed off two more NP’s now we just need to hit up Zion and the other two districts of Canyonlands.  We also are planning on going back to Capitol Reef to do some backpacking/mountain biking, yea for living so close to cool places!

What have you been doing?

Well, a lot has been going on since my last update…I had my 25th birthday and was able to go on a hike with Steph and then have lasagna and cupcakes with my sisters at Mom’s.

Steph packed a picnic that we ate atop of Powell Butte…

Jason arrived in Oregon a few days later we took my Mom on a hike for Mother’s day in Forest Park with some sisters…

I went wine tasting with Kathy and Jason’s cousin Sarah…

Jason, Corey, Jos and I went to the cabin in Goldendale, we explored the stream some and found nettles and fiddle heads to cook for dinner we also got to check out M3 at the Goldendale Observatory.  On the way home we stopped at Oneonta Gorge and had a very memorable adventure…

Lots of pretty flowers blooming in the Gorge…

We had beautiful weather with great views of the mountains while we were in Goldendale and on our hike in the Gorge…

Yesterday we went to the Coast and had amazing weather as well, in fact the next few days are suppose to be sunny and beautiful which is good since Kelsey’s wedding is on Saturday.  In other fun and exciting news I have been slowly but surely working on wedding details things seem to be coming together, I went cake tasting with my Mom and Sisters, yum then Jason and I went back and took some samples over to Corey and Alyssa’s to narrow down our flavors, lemon poundcake, carrot cake with pineapple and no nuts and chantilly chocolate are our top three and luckily we get to choose three flavors!  Then on Tuesday Jason and I met up with Alyssa for a little photo session since she is going to document the wedding, we had a great time with her, go check out her website here! That is all for now there are additional pictures here, Jason and I will be heading to Utah on either Sunday or Monday and then it is back to Ohio for the hooding and then we are off to Utah again.  Oh yes and Jason spruced up the look of the blog :)

Mohican

Jason and I decided to go on a quick camping trip, there was one last place that we have not been to hiking/camping-wise in Ohio that has been on our list.  It is normally a very popular place to go in the fall and summer months but we know that popular here often means the opposite for us, so we went to Mohican State Park in the off season and we were one of probably 5 total tent campers, it was a perfect escape.

That is me testing out our new hammock that we got recently with our REI dividend, it is wonderful, comfortable and warm and it fits two people! On our drive up to Mohican our friends Kirsten and Joe called to see if we wanted to go hiking and somehow I convinced them to come up to Mohican for the day go hiking and make dinner with us at the campsite!  I couldn’t convince them to go camping last minute in the cold weather with us but they promised they would go before we leave Ohio for Utah (Leah and Dave you guys are coming too).

It was a nice sunny day in the 50’s but it dropped into the 30’s 20’s at night;  personally I prefer camping in the cold in Ohio it is a lot nicer than camping when it is too hot and you feel like you are sticking to everything, I am looking forward to camping in Utah sounds like the weather will be similar to Bend’s weather!  For dinner we had spaghetti with squash, zucchini and carrots in the sauce, Kirsten made a yummy fruit salad with a honey and lime dressing, it was so light and delicious! We also had garlic bread which got a bit toasty on the bottom but the inside of the bread and the top was still edible.  We had a nice hot fire and made s’mores for dessert, I introduced them to how I like to make my s’mores by melting the chocolate, it is messy but so worth it. It was so nice having company for dinner!

The next morning Jason and I got up and there was frost on the ground, sort of chilly but we made a fire had some hot chocolate and packed up camp which helped to warm us up.  On our way back we stopped at the fire tower, Jason said that if he remembered correctly his mom was not impressed with the tower, I agree with Kathy, it was not impressive at all but we still climbed to the top, it was sort of scary and I can imagine it would be even worse when there are lots of people there, the sign posted at the bottom of the tower says no more than six people on the tower at one time, seems like a mess to me.

It was a great quick trip to lift our spirits  and get us excited for camping/backpacking season!
